Should i take of Speedfan readings for my HDDs?

Post by GLO » Wed Oct 26, 2005 6:07 am

I have 2 HDDs. A Samsung SP1614C 160gb and recently a Maxtor DM10 300gb drive.

The Maxtor reads excellent performance and condition (brand new unit) whils the 1 year old Samsung reads excellent performance, medium condition.

Presently the Maxtor is sitting ontop of the Samsung HDD 34C and the Maxtorreads a few degrees hotter @ 37C.

Case temp is around 40C.

Do i ahve anything to worry about?

max operating temp for HDs is about 55.

Your far below that, so you have nothing to worry about. My suspended maxtor runs around ~45 degrees and Im not real worried.

I think you mean the "Fitness" bar at the bottom of SpeedFan's SMART tab. If so, you can completely ignore it. It displays a bogus value.

Yes it is Fitness that i am refering to!

If its bogus values, how do they determine it?

And lastly, to assist in the natural cooling of the HDDs, do you think that positioning them vertically, (on their long side) would be beneficial? (rather than lying in the standard horizontal position?

There will probably be no difference and if it is it won't be much, besides, your temperatures are good as they are.

Im just trying to get the case temps down abit then, as the ambient case temp is around 40C. How does this compare to most other systems?
