I have not yet encountered a DVD drive that is quiet enough for me, it's fine when there are explosions and gunfights and stuff on screen, but in the quiet parts of films I hate hearing the whirr of the DVD going round. Hence my reccomendation would be to simply share a DVD drive in another computer on your LAN and play the film over the network (assuming you have another computer always on, and a home LAN). Alternatively, just copy the DVD to your hard drive before watching it, you can always delete the files after watching the film if you don't have huge amounts of free space.

In 1x DVD playback AOpen dvd-1648 is amongst the least noisy (as measured by c't magazine). Better than Samsung/LG/Nec/LiteOn/Plextor/Asus.

I can second that. From experience. Very quiet drives.

Is there some freeware software that will allow me to configure my AOpen to do this? (also, is it selectable betweeb max rip speed and silent dvd playback)?

Yes it is, but for anything other than watching movies it's useless, because it's poor behaviour to slow-down programs.

get one of these: Samsung cdrw/dvd-rom

next get one of this: Damptek Blocks

cut out a slot for the drive to fit in the 5.25" block. place it in a standard 5.25" drive bay. you'll probably want to dremmel a front 5.25" bay cover so that it looks good and flush. but when your done it will be dead silent while playing dvd's
