platters, capacity & heat

Post by UrbanVoyeur » Tue Feb 21, 2006 4:18 pm

Do drives with more platters generate more heat?

I'd like to get a samsung 2.5" MP sereis drive. I was wondering if the 60 or 80 GB models gave off more heat than the 40 GB version.

And does anyone know if the 60 GB verison has more platters than the 40 GB?

Yes, drives with more platters typically generate more heat. However if you are going with laptop drive don't let it bother you. Laptop drives are much more heat resistant and they actually run pretty cool unless they are actively seeking. My dad's Hitachi 7K100 runs almost cool to touch when idle, of course it gets pretty hot when copying lots of data, but like I said that shouldn't concern you.
