Anyone managed to get their hands on one yet? Yes, you guessed it, attach your ear to it and let us know what you think if you have one.

133GB platters. 3 for the 400GB.

Here's a review of Samsung's HD300LD comparing it to the older Samsung drives, the SP2514N, and the SP2504C : http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/sto ... 300ld.html (review dated 14th March 2006)

Spinpoint T133 (3 platters)
HD400LJ
HD300LJ
HD400LD
HD300LD
idle: 27dBA
seek: 29 dBA

Spinpoint P120 (2 platters)
SP2504C
SP2004C
SP2514N
SP2014N
idle: 25dBA
seek: 28 dBA

Spinpoint P80 (2 and fewer platters)
HD16xJJ
SP1614C
SP1614N
and lower
idle: 27dBA
seek: 28 dBA

Brief comment on sound profile of the drive from the review above:

"As we have already discussed, an increased number of platters (3) inevitable leads to the noise growth in T133, though the HD300LD model is still very quiet — nearly as quiet as P120-series models. Subjectively, all these Samsung drives generate distinct low-frequency rotational noise (unlike many competitors), while there is very little high-frequency noise, both rotational and in active seek mode."

So no dramatic advances in noise reduction here.

Since they moved from 1-2 platters to 3, it would be very difficult to improve on the acoustics.

I just ordered a HD300LD which should be arriving by wednesday. This is going in my server which is stored behind a door in the basement next to the washer and dryer. It currently has a double-height 36GB SCSI drive. So it will definitly be a noise improvment for me. I also have a 80GB SP Nidec that I can compare it to.
