Hey guys, i been thinking about upgrading my storage. Does anyone own one of these 500 gb drives? They are cheap and from the review sound great. Anyone know what temps these run at etc? The review said low power, so i expect low heat as well.

Thanks

I'd like to know how well the 320gb version (WD3200KS) compares, in terms of noise..

well i ordered and recieved it. I am pretty happy about it. It has a huge amount of space, is very quiet (can't tell the difference from samsungs from about 1m away). The only thing that worries me is the temp. It runs at about 46 deg celsius, while my 200gb samsung runs around 37. The specifics say:

Operating 5° C to 55° C
Non-operating -40° C to 65° C

Have the higher capacity WDs lost that idle tick noise I've had on two 3200JBs?

These specifications are for the ambient environment, i.e., air around the HDD. The expectation is that if the ambient temperature is up to 55°C, that the drive internally will be a little warmer than that. This is planned for in the design of the HDD. In other words, don't treat 55°C as the maximum acceptable number that you read back from the HDD.

That said, the cooler the better for HDDs, if you want long life.

I have a WD3200JB and it does not have an idle tick noise.
