Quieting my NAS

Post by Buddabing » Fri Oct 20, 2006 2:35 pm

Hello,

My NAS looks a lot like a hard drive enclosure.

It looks like this, except it's not the same brand.

The NAS comes with a 25mm fan which is very loud and has a bad buzzing quality to its sound.

The case of the NAS is aluminum and does get warm when the NAS is powered on. The hard drive inside the NAS is maybe 1/4" (or 0.5 cm) away from the edge of the case.

I see several ways to make the NAS quiet.

1) Take out the fan and hope that natural convection keeps the drive from overheating. After all, the 25mm screamer can't move too much air. This seems risky to me.

2) Replace the fan with something quieter.

3) Implement some kind of way to transfer heat from the hard drive to the case of the NAS. Something similar to what other quiet hard drive enclosures have would be good, but I don't know how those things keep their drives cool.

4) Take out the fan and run the NAS caseless.

Suggestions welcome.

TIA,
Buddabing

What option did you go for? And was it successful?
