Enclosure for 2.5" drives?
Hi all
I have two 5200.4 80gb Momentus 2.5" Sata drives currently sitting on foam near the lowest pci slots in my 3700bqe case. They idle at about 23-25° and I'm satisfied but I want more... as I can still hear those babies. What can I do? I've tried to pack 'em up in foam and put them between two optical drives: no noise but they run HOT and I'm a litte worried about this.
I've no intake fan and no HD & floppy cage, the WC pump sits there (and I'll try to put it in some enclosure sooner or later, I know...)
What do you suggest for my HDs? I'd like to put them into something, to eliminate che noise I still hear... but where? I've seen the Nexus Drive-A-Way which is suitable for 2,5" hard disks too... but is it effective?
Thanks, ciao!
Francesco

You say the idle at 23-25° and you think they are too hot???
The way to quiet them completely is to enclose them in sound blocking material, and then suspend the whole thing with elastic cord. Then run a very slow quiet 120mm fan in front of them; you probably won't hear this. What kind of sound damping material? How about rubber?
This is an SPCR DIY project.
This is a Scythe rubber box that came a year or two after.
I'm sure you can make one for 2.5" HDDs.

I mean that I've tried to enclose them in foam (something like this, used for shipping computers... I don't know the right name) but the temperature was too high, I touched the disks and they were very very hot. This happened a week ago.
After that, I removed the disks from the foam tomb and now they are not enclosed, they just sit on a foam layer (to prevent vibrations) in the back zone of my pc and the temperature is around 25° in idle, which is obviously good for me... but I can still hear them.
Sorry for the misunderstanding, I hope it's clear now... my english is not so good
I'll give a look at the links, hope to get some ideas on how to proceed
Thankyou again.
Ciao!

How about a Scythe Quiet Drive 2.5 SQD2.5-1000
That's awesome! I want one. I hope they make it to the European market soon, because as it looks now they're only available in Japan.winguy wrote:How about a Scythe Quiet Drive 2.5 SQD2.5-1000
One forum member has used a hard sided PSP case (the kind you store a PSP in) to enclose his 2.5" HDD with.
I can't find the link, but I thought it was a rather ingenious solution. It obviously wont' win any thermal dissipation awards, but you could remove the foam and pack the inside with gelpacks if you really want some heat transfer. You could then suspend the entire enclosure or set it on some foam.

You're thinking of this:
PSP case 2.5" drive silencer How-To
I've used this technique to make three 2.5" enclosures, containing 40gig drives of various makes/models. I'm happy to report that they're still holding up perfectly well. Just make sure to use non-drying wax based clay!

No I haven't seen it anywhere. I e-mailed Scythe Europe on the 7th, and was told it would show up "within 2 weeks". I guess that information was inaccurate.Per Hansson wrote:Anyone seen this thing in Europe yet?
It would be awsome for use in my Dreambox satellite receiver, as it is the WD Scorpio WD1200VE is a bit noisy for my taste, might be ok for a computer in a normal computer room but not in a receiver in the bedroom...
Drive A Way
I have two computers, each with Momentus 160 G drives in Nexus Drive A Way enclosures and you have to have your ear within three inches to hear them. It is a really, really, quiet solution. In my quietest computer, I have a fanless power supply and two undervolted 120 mm Nexus fans and I have never heard the hard drive. Highly recommended.

Don't go buying all of these now, I still need to get a friend in the US to order 2 for me and I don't want them sold out.

Thanks allot for the heads up!
Question, how much did they guy rip you off on S&H fees? He's asking $55 to ship to the Netherlands... I can't imagine Sweden being any less.
I'm getting a friend to buy them for me but it'll probably be about the same amount in total shipping.

You can buy SQD 2.5" in Poland, too, should you, for some pervert reason, want to ship from here
Point is, it's nice to have it here as I'm pondering getting a Momentus 5400.3 120GB and in case I'm in for a disappointment, I'll have a ready solution. And will be a very poor man afterwards
EDIT
Notice you can put your superquiet 2.5" drive into this small SQD, and then you can put this assembly into the big 3.5" SQD.
