something better than seagate barracuda 7200.7 120GB

Post by [ro]sharky » Sun Apr 15, 2007 1:59 pm

Hello everybody.

The main noise sources from my pc are the PSU (seasonic s12 330) and my HDD (seagate barracuda 7200.7 120GB)

I am going to replace the hdd because i need something bigger and more silent!
The only problem i am having with it it the idle constant noise.
I tried WD200JS and it's the same, the idle noise it's altmost the same, only a bit louder, but it has a much lower seeknoise.
The main problem are the bearings that generate a high frequency noise when they are rotating at such a high speed.

I need some suggestions for a new harddrive:
It has to be on P. ATA (ATA100/133), capacity minimum 160GB, 7200 rpm for high performance and a price in the 80E/95$ range.
Needless to say, the new hdd must be quieter than the one i currently have.

Thanks!

Many of us on SPCR are quite pleased with Samsung drives. Both of mine are substantially quieter then the previous 80Gb 7200.7 Seagate.

And Welcome to SPCR!

I have tested a samsung and it was way louder than my seagate.
Unfortunately i forgot to write down the model. It was a 80GB spinpoint older one, about 2 or 3 years old.
The idle noise was sharper and in a narrower band, and the seek noise was horrible.
I know that not models are the same, that's why I am asking you to recommend one, from your own experience.

I think my hard drive is pretty hard to beat without compromising performance.

Considering both these items are/were on the Recommended list, you must have a very low noise floor. So I don't think there is a hard drive that fits these requirements:
It has to be on P. ATA (ATA100/133), capacity minimum 160GB, 7200 rpm for high performance and a price in the 80E/95$ range.
If SATA was an option you could get a 2.5" drive, but it's not.

I think you would be better off spending your money on a hard drive enclosure (ie Scythe Quiet Drive) than a new HDD.

I want a new hardrive anyway. Instead of buying a aditional one i want to change this one for something bigger and quieter.
I'm waiting for Samsung's SpinPoint S166 series.

I don't know if the newer Samsungs are any better, but the older models vibrate like crazy. That's my experience anyway. The drive resonance was very audible.

Look into soft mounting if you consider a Samsung drive.

I have no apparent vibration from either Samsung when soft-mounted with foam spacers in Sonata drive sleds.
