PC speaker and hard disks, do they play nice?

Post by ACook » Fri May 18, 2007 9:18 pm

I've got a few cases standing around, and 2 have a big ass pc speaker with a strong magnet right in the middle of the bottom front space where I'd like to make some floating hd setup.

Do those magnets play nice with a hd, or should I just remove the buggers?

Magnets never play nice.

Most HDDs are now well-shielded, even against magnets, and a stationary drive might not get damaged much by a magnet mounted vertically to the drive, but why take the risk.

I'm thinking this is an old Compaq case where there's an actual speaker, not just a beeper?

the server case one is plugged in and does make quite a loud beep, not like the more short beeps on one of my other boards.

Those magnets are far too weak to do anything to a hard drive.

If it's just a tiny one like that... yea.

In the Compaq cases for the old Deskpro series(?) the speaker's about the size of a small fist.
