Samsung spinpoint HD400LJ and LD comparison

Post by potsy » Mon May 21, 2007 8:08 pm

Hi there all,

I recently tried out an HD400LD thinking it would be pretty much the same as the HD400LJ in the recommended HDD list. On the Samsung website the specs look pretty similar, but it is a whole lot louder than the other drives I'm using. Louder for sure than 2x Barracuda 7200 32GB. I have a Maxtor 200GB model 6L200PO which is really quiet. I pulled it out of one of their one touch external drives because it is easily quiet enough to go in my PC.

I'm going to stick with the Maxtor, but I want another drive so was thinking of buying the HD400LJ because it's on the list. Does anyone know if there's a real difference between the LD and LJ models or is the LD I got just a dud?

Cheers

Never tried a HD400LD but you probably got a bad sample. T166 HD501LJ, HD321KJ and S166 HD161HJ have been rated very high noisewise.

Thanks Alfred,
You're probably right, I can't see that there would be any major physical difference between the LJ and LD that would account for noise so I probably just got a bad sample. It's like a freight train in there!
