Barracuda 7200.7 (ST380011A)
Hi,
I've recently purchased an 80Gb Barracuda 7200.7 (ST380011A). Generally I'm pleased with drive, noise levels of the disk rotation are low, and disk access is also low (not silent). However when the drive is idle, and not being accessed, it intermittently starts making what I can only describe as a audible clicking/ticking noise, which lasts up to 20/30secs. It only happens when the drive is idle, and is starting to get a little annoying.
Other than that the drive appears to function fine, anyone experienced this or know what it is?
Also in terms of noise and performance, how does this drive compare to a 80Gb Barracuda ATA IV in real world usage?
Thanks,
G

Well, if it had the name "Iomega" in front of it, that would be "The Click Of Death" my friend.
I don't think your hard drive is suffering from that though
It might be part of the hard drive's "thermal recalibration" routine. But I can't be sure. I can't hear any clicking over the whine of my WD 120G!!
Sometimes drives will make random seeks and writes as part of the SMART monitoring. Maybe it's as simple as that?

The clicking noise could be due to a calibration which is done by a new drive for some hours. I'am not shure. Try to search the storagereview.com forum.elitezoid wrote:

Finally I find someone else with same problem
elitezoid:
I have the exact same problem with the exaxt same disk.
I have had a Cuda IV 40GB for a year, and I have never heard it! My new disk is in general a little louder, but that clicking/ticking noise is BAD.
I emailed the store before purchasing it, asking for the difference between IV/V/7200.7, since they all had the same prize. The only answer I got was that 7200.7 was the newest, so I ordered the newest.
Now I'm thinking about returning it.
I try to have a silent system, because I sometimes keep it on at night in my bedroom. Right now that disk is what makes me turn off the PC.

I hear you ropez, normally I don't hear the drive above the hum of my case fans, until the cuda starts clicking away, it's intermittent and only when the drive is idle. It's not particularly loud, but it is starting to get really quite annoying! I've had the drive running in total for over 50 hours, and the clicking is still occuring!
