Is it possible to enable AAM on external HD? (WD MyBook 500)

My Book essential 500gb, USB interface only. bought it a few days ago. nice but noisy. seeks are main annoyance - can i enable AAM? if so how?

Not through USB. You could try taking it apart and connecting it internally...

that's terrible. they should figure out a way of allowing it to be enabled via USB. the other thing that irritates me about the drive is, i can turn it off by using the stop USB devices icon thing, but how to turn it back on? have to unplug usb then replug in - unlike previous WD externals which have had an on-off button on the drive itself.
