I have placed an order for 1TB Samsung (32MB cache variant). Time of arrival is still completely open, might take even months.

Hopefully it will arrive in North America (or even England) sometime soon!

Impressions I was getting from other retailers is that it's been vaporware since announcement and would probably continue til the end of the year...

Maybe it needs a phone check but I'm 99% confident that this store doesn't have any Samsung F1 in stock. What they're doing here is a well-known technique to get many customers pre-order. Just have a look at the price they're asking...

I use to check availability by going to the german www.heise.de price search engine. For example Samsung HD102UJ is here. You can see that currently only one website in a list of 61 sites says it's on stock (green cell)(just have a look at their price...), and another one says they can have it in 3~4 days (yellow cell). Well, I'll know some really have it in stock when at least 10% of the listed shops are green- or yellow-colored.

All 320, 500, 750 GB & 1 TB Samsung F1 models first announced for July/August are now planned for October.

End of 2007 will be a busy one. New samsung HDDs, 45nm Penryn, even the new 65nm nvidia 9800 is rumored to come out this fall.

That's too bad. Might have to pick up a 7200.11 500GB instead...if those will ever come out too...

Why 7200.11 500GB? Even if it would have just two platters, it's still a Seagate. Samsung T166 500GB is likely quieter despite the extra platter. Heck, I'd even choose a WD AAKS or T7K500 over any Seagate these days. Well, until someone verifies they have started supporting AAM feature again but no-one really even expects that to happen. Seagate has made it's decision and it's been a constant downhill since Barracuda IV.

I already have two 500GB t166, but would like a third HDD that is faster for windows and games (my Seagate .10 is only temporary and will be sold very cheaply to my sister).

Numbers I've seen seems to indicate that the 7200.11 series is quieter than than 7200.10, and while this may not be true then the drive is most likely not the be a lot more noisier than a 7200.10 which is not as silent as the Samsungs, but I've taken some measures to quieten it down. I could take it steps further by building, for instance, a hdd-drive silencer made of wood (preferably MDF) and add some sounddampening if required...

As it's now, I'm quite happy with the noise level of my computer...I wish for more performance and even more space. I might have to wait and see how F1 performs if the new Seagates don't suit my needs.

The two biggest Seagates reviewed by StorageReview also happen to be the sluggiest of all big capacity HDDs. Take a look at Single-User Suite results and see how completely lethargic those scores are. For example benchmark using typical office software access patterns:
7K1000: 910
T7K500: 826
T166: 806
WD5000YS (equivalent to WD5000KS): 763
Seagate ES (equivalent to 7200.10) 750GB: 575
Seagate NL.2 (equivalent to 7200.9) 500GB: 508

Sure, you're talking about 7200.11 so they may be better... or even worse. I don't the 7200.11 has a chance to beat 7K1000... and it's quite probably it cant even beat T7K500 or even older 7K500. Seagates just don't have good firmware... no... not even a barely decent one.

If you consider Hitachis too loud (even though they are probably not as loud as Seagates) you can always go for T166. Even T166 will outperform those noisy Seagates.

Also worth mentioning is that they do consume as much (or even slightly more) power (and thus generate as much or even more heat) as 5-platter 7K1000. (They use 1½ watts more than 7K1000 when idling but 1 watt less when non-AAM seeking.)

I don't see much reason to choose a Seagate these days. Warranty length is one of the very few positive things about modern Seagates. But considering that prices drop rapidly, an equivalent capacity drive is quite cheap 3 years from purchase date. I seriously don't think warranty extension beyond that is worth the sluggish performance combined with unpleasant noise characteristics.

I forgot that StorageReview did have 7200.9 500GB reviewed too. While NL.2 is enterprise equivalent of 7200.9, differences are likely due to different manufacture day. 7200.9 was reviewed first and thus probably an older sample, and had higher office benchmark score (around 600 instead of 500, but still far worse than those of Hitachi, Samsung and WD (around 800)).

Well, I have now placed my 320GB .10 inside my sisters computer and use two t166 500GB drives, and I can't really notice any difference in performance. There's certainly a difference in the soundvolume, as I've already said the Samsungs are much more quiet.

According to fudzilla, the new Seagates will start to ship next week, so I guess we'll soon found out if it's anything to have:

Seems alfred was right, these drive will come in octomber or maybe even later. It's sad that Samsung announced these drives with ~3 months before launch.

anyone ordered this yet? the site doesn't look too trustworthy to me, and 500 bucks seems like a very high price. Maybe they're just saying they have it, but will reply to an order saying that they're sold out and you'll have to wait (earning them the cash of people trying to be early adopters).

Anyway, none of the german stores have either model availabe yet, I just hope the october report was accurate.

well I see one for 466AU, which claims availability, but that site too looks kinda ghettoy... maybe that's just the way australian sites look , I'm probably spoiled by newegg and the like. interesting that it hits aussies first, I'm looking forward to any early adopters posting some feedback on it.
