It's basically the same as the KS model in the Recommended section on SPCRs main site, just lacks the old 4-pin molex socket for power. Some say it's quieter too, but I put that down to matters of opinion... but it is a newer revision, so you never know.
Search the forums. It's an ongoing discussion, and there is no clear winner. For my money on a 3.5" though, I'd buy an AAKS.

I think actually the AAKS is a three-platter model, whereas the previous KS had four platters, so it should theoretically be a bit quieter (as well as faster) all else being equal.Das_Saunamies wrote:It's basically the same as the KS model in the Recommended section on SPCRs main site, just lacks the old 4-pin molex socket for power. I'm not sure if it necessarily holds true in practice though, I have a feeling it's often just down to luck of the draw.

Didn't know that about the AAKS. Even better. My Seagate 160 with a single 160GB platter is the noisiest HDD at idle I've ever had, the vibrations are just terrible... but I blame that on it being a Seagate, not on the type of the platter.nick705 wrote: I think actually the AAKS is a three-platter model, whereas the previous KS had four platters, so it should theoretically be a bit quieter (as well as faster) all else being equal.

Seagate maximises speed at the cost of user comfort. Expect no AAM or damping.
Maxtors are bombs. And nowadays Seagate owns them, so expect a loud life and a bang.
Samsung's alright. They've had their drive on the Recommended list a looong time. Think it was the yard stick for some time too, if not still.
My money is still on the AAKS as it is a recent, silent and well-performing model. There was something wrong with all the rest, but dangit if I'm digging up what.
If you wanna spin your head around a little more, take a look at Hitachis.

I might want one more 500 GB drive or two.
Seriously, though, I'm glad you guys are discussing these drives again. They are all around the same price now. The WD AAKS and the Hitachi are almost the same and those are the ones I'm considering.
I bought a Samsung already but haven't compared it to my Seagate 120GB. I'm sure it's quieter, though. The Samsung was cheaper but now the WD and Hitachi are both less expensive. Therefore, it's between those two.
