sandwich or 2.5"

Post by ZMAJ » Thu Sep 06, 2007 6:17 am

I made it.

-scythe ninja with 500rpm fan
-passive 7600GT
-moded enermax liberty with D12SL-12
-no case fans

and I don't have a case atm... everthing is on the desk.

Only component which is audible now is my HDD (which is WD 3200AAKS). I bought that drive coz I heard it is very quiet but it still isn't enough quiet (Im not taling only about seeks... seeks are not that problem, but idle/motor sound is...)

So now I think about making that sandwich thing or buying new 2.5" HDD.

Can sandwich make my HDD inaudible? (aslo i will buy antec P182 soon)

or shell I buy 2.5" HDD?

HDD Toshiba 120Gb MK8037GSX

This is 2.5" 120gb SATA drive which gives best ratio of storage/price for a 2.5" HDDs our stores in Croatia can offer.

I was just wondering does any1 has this drive?

So, sandwich or 2.5"??

Wait until you get your P182 before you begin replacing parts.
The case with the front door closed will muffle the noise from your hard drive in the lower chamber, possibly to the point where you are satisfied.

I guess it depends on your need. I've the need of storage space, and I connect 3 3.5' HDDs in my main system. If you don't need storage requirement, go fo 2.5' route. I bet you won't regret it. Almost any 5400rpm 2.5' HDD with sandwitch defeat 3.5' with sandwich in acoustic aspect.

I hope you understand my foreign english.

I understood :)

I will wait till I buy antec 1st and then decide.

Also I don't need much storage so it doest matter... I both 3200AAKS becouse it was cheapest of all AAKS and I heard that series is pretty quite. (before WD I bought samsung P120 which was loud)

Stucking your WD in scythe Quiet drive, and making that lie on sorthabone in lower chamber of P182B would make your system nearly inaudiable I believe. However, you still need could need one exhaust fan for the system. Get nexus 120mm and put it around 6v with fanmate 2. I am sure your system then is inaudiable on normal conditions.

remove top exhaust fan, or then put another Nexus at 6v on it and use your Ninja as passive.

Greetings to everyone.
Can sandwich make my HDD inaudible?
What sandwich are you talking about ?you mean placing the hd in an enclosure?
I have 2 wd 320 ks models enclosed in 2 scythe quite drive lying one on top of the other in the lower compartment of P180.My opinion is that yes it did made a difference in noise point of view towards silencing my rig.
But now i will pass to another stage im planning to buy 2 2.5inh hd enclosed them an place them in that lower compartment.
Overall i think that the noise signature with those 2.5 inc hd will be lower than with my current rig.
Noise wise i think the solution with the 2.5inh will b better for noise reduction but they are some downsides also(performance wise etc) :D

I would prefer single platter ones havent decided which one yet.
I i'm thinking about WD Scorpio 600BEVS or Fujitsu MHV2060BH.
I don't really know if there is noise difference between different capacity drives because i heard that the 120GB capacity 1200BEVS which is a double platter is one of the gold standards, but i think since its a dual platter it will perform less than the 60Gb competitor silence wise.
Anyhow i will try to post this inquire in another thread.
I don't own any 2.5inc hd but im about to.
Here some links that can help some about the 250and 160 gb models.

AFAIK, currently there are three alternatives worth considering (in the order of decreasing soundproofing capabilities):

1. A notebook drive in a mini-Quiet Drive (or a homebrew analog). Dead silent, best choice in terms of noise dampening. Performance suffers, however (RAID?).

2. A 3.5' 7200 RPM FDB drive in a homebrew aluminun box filled with gel packs:

Almost dead silent, but at night the drive is slightly audible. The heatsink is not necessary, actually, feel free to swap it with another aluminum plate.

3. The same drive in a 3.5' Quiet Drive. Motor whine is audible, seeks are audible, but the overall noise level is moderate. You probably won't be able to hear it if you put the box into a case, just don't forget to mount it softly.

I vote for both! A 2,5 drive sandwitched between 3,5. Expect a moderate sound reduction. In a well dumped case like the p180 it might be close to inaudible. If you have a pair of spare drives you can try it now on your existing drive.

I have heard good things about the skythe enclosures, and those home made ones look promising also. Might be a little more effective than a sandwich.

I was wrong. There is not only toshiba here which has good ratio of price/storage...

So this HDDs are worth to consider (all 2.5", 5400rpm, 8mb and SATA) here in Croatia:

-Toshiba 120gb
-Fujitsu 120gb
-Hitachi 120gb
-Seagate 120gb
-Samsung 120gb
-WD 120gb

So, is any1 familiar with any of this drives??
