Hitachi 1TB 7K1000 Model Differences?

Post by acaurora » Sat Sep 29, 2007 12:13 pm

Does anyone know the differences between these two models? I have tried looking on the net but I can't seem to find anything showing what's different.

HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000 HDS721010KLA330 (0A35155) 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000 HDS721010KLA330 (0A34915) 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Retail

HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000 HDS721010KLA330 (0A34193) 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Retail

The 0A34193 and 0A35155 cost the same, while the 0A34915 costs $50 more. The only differences I see are the OEM / Retail. All 3 list the same model # of HDS721010KLA330. Am I missing something here? Which one should I get?

Stay away from the expensive one at least. They are all HDS721010KLA330. That is
H for Hitachi
D for Deskstar
S for Standard (not "T" like two/three platter which is reserved for future "less platters"-revision of same capacity)
72 for 7200rpm
10 and 10 is 1000GB out of 1000GB maximum capacity of the model
K for Kurofune (factory nickname, other nicks are V for Vancouver (2-3 platter), P for Pathfinder (1-platter))
L for low-profile
A3 for SATA 3.0 Gbit/s
3 for 32MB cache
0 is reserved number (not used yet)

So, what differs may be warranty period, packaging and extras (such as data cable supplied with the drive). Retail drives typically come in cardboard box and a data cable. "OEM" variant (which in reality should be called "retail bare drive" typically comes in just an antistatic bag with no extras but possibly a longer warranty.

Real OEM drives shouldn't even be sold separately to customers and if they are sold, they have NO WARRANTY WHAT SO EVER offered by factory. OEM offers the warranty, that is: the manufacturer of the computer it came in. Obviously they shouldn't enter retail channel, but since "retail bare drives" are usually sold as "OEM", it adds a lot of confusion.

What to get? From the two cheap one, I'd take retail if I needed the data cable. And if I didn't need it... well, it doesn't matter. Check what warranty if offered with those two.
