short less deep optical drives; which brands and models?

Post by niels007 » Tue Oct 23, 2007 2:06 pm

Hiya!

I did a quick search for 'short' and 'less deep' and nothing much came up; so I ask..

What brands of dvd writer are extra short / less deep? I'm considering an upgrade to micro atx and the Antec 3480 and I'd like my psu to have as much room around it as possible..

I've been out of the business too long; I have no clue which drives are shorter!

Info appreciated :)

Sony makes the shortest models, sold under their own name or re-branded like "Lite-on".

Samsung's SH-S203B is a few centimetres shorter than usual. 1.5x the size of a disc if memory serves.

Own the drive, replaced an old LG with it. It's far from optimal regarding noise, but it's fast and compact.

Thanks guys,

It seems most drives today are shorter than my old NEC which iirc was 190mm:

Lite-on: 145(W) x 41.3(H) x 170(D) mm
Benq: 146 X 42 X 178 (mm)
Samsung: 148.2 x 42 x 170
NEC AD-7173S: 148 mm x 42 mm x 175 mm

Your search has ended.....that 170mm is apparently the shortest optical drive available, and likely to remain so. Lite-On drives are made by Sony, as are some other brands. Which is the best.....good question. :?

lite-on drives highly recommended by me.. i got a benq dw1650 because of the glowing reviews on cdfreaks and cdrinfo etc.. but i felt it never was quite as good as my old liteys :) there is a huge community of hacks and tweaks for the firmwares. however, the drives are very loud

Liteon are mostly short but when I needed one I went to an OEM shop and measured a whole bunch of drives. Shortest was a Samsung, I seem to remember it measured a little under the quoted 170mm.

The Plextor PX-716A I've had for over two years now, also is only 170mm deep.
