Today's most silent 2.5" hdd ? (excluding ssd)

Post by mertsag » Fri Mar 14, 2008 1:02 pm

Hi,
I've seen spcr recommendations on hard disks, but the models reviewed are pretty old now (the last one is 2 years old !).
What's the most silent 2.5", 5400 rpm, sata drive between those widely available today ?

By widely available I mean last generation drives like momentus 5400.3 or 5400.4, travelstar 5k160 or 5k250, scorpio 120-320 gb...

Thanks !

Hi there.

AFAIK the single-platter WD Scorpio's are still considered the quietest 2,5" HDDs.

Im not sure.

A few people in here will know. Hopefully theyll drop by this thread.

Maybe WD's webpage has the answer.

You might want to try Samsung M5 HM160HI or WD WD1600BEVT or Hitachi 5K320 160GB HTS543216L9A300 .

current gen drives are 160gb/platter. i have an HM160 inside a SQD 2.5 and it's silent past 5-6 inches.

I'm considering buying either WD1600BEVS, 5K250/5K320 160 GB (what's the platter density on the 5K250 line, BTW?) or Samsung M5S 160 GB. What's got me stuck right now in my choosing is my uncertainty on whether I'll be able to disable APM on any of these drives. The clicking noises from my current Samsung M80 bothers the hell out of me whenever I hear them and I can't disable APM using hdparm.

I took the advice from this site under the recommended HDD's and picked up a Scorpio 160GB HDD and I couldn't be happier. I cannot hear the thing unless my ear is up to the case where the HDD resides or I have the case open and my ear is within a couple inches of it. I actually saw a performance INCREASE with this drive opposed to my old Seagate SATA 3.5" HDD.

I also suspended the HDD for even more silence.
