WD Green Power reliability? F1 reliability?

Post by protellect » Fri Mar 21, 2008 7:28 pm

Yo.

Newegg's reviews of the 1TB Greenpower drive are sort of mediocre. I know enough to take the egg's customer reviews with a grain of salt, but more than anything I want something reliable for my file server.

I used to be very much a Seagate only man, but now that I focus on noise/heat/power usage, I'm really interested in these drives.

I'm also looking at the Samsung F1 drives as well. I'm pleased with my current Samsung 500GB drive.

It seems all the 1TB drives on the egg have mediocre ratings, for the most part. Then again newegg comments remind me a lot of youtube comments.

I got impatient and ordered a WD-RE2-GT - 1TB

[http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822136206]

Very few egg reviews. but again, grain of salt. 5 year warranty and low power usage make me happy. look for updates sometimes soon on my file server >:

My first Western Digital drive after 10 years of seagates.
[All of which still work, 4x 320GB, 2x250GB, 2x120GB]

Then again the maxtors I have [30GB 7200RPM, 60GB 7200RPM] still work too. and they are 8+ years old.

:)

Pricegrabber had it somewhere for 252$ shipped. A bit of premium,

0.25.2$/gb. But one disk in my file server instead of two [currently a 500GB samsung and a 320GB seagate]

My first WD10EACS drive lasted 48h in a TiVo. Before installation in the TiVo, I ran the full set of WD diagnostic tests and it passed them all. After my TiVo started locking up, I pulled the GP drive and it failed the quick SMART test right away. (The drive temp in the TiVo was 42C, pretty much the same as the stock WD1600AVBS.)

Infant mortality? I sure hope the warranty replacement lasts longer!
