Samsung has plans for 5400 rpm 334GB platter drives EcoGreen
Samsung global site has released specs for some new spinpoint drives named EcoGreen F DT. They seem to be using platters with the same density as the current F1. Rotational Speed is 5400 rpm. Idle power consumption seems to be reduced by ~35%.

No surprise, the popularity of the WD GP series has made its rivals take note.
Could be good in a 1 platter version offering 333GB, the Samsung F1 drives are faster than most, if they retain most of their speed when dropping from 7200 to 5400rpm then it could be a winner.

You might want to take another look at the Samsung website.FartingBob wrote:No surprise, the popularity of the WD GP series has made its rivals take note.

They are calling those drives 320GB drives now. Sure they still use a mixed message saying "capacity : 320 GB" on one part of the page and "Max. 334GB Formatted Capacity per Disk" on another part of the page but the list of drives lists them as 320GB
There are numerous posts about the issue in naming these drives in the WD6400AAKS thread

Well, Samsung lists 320GB,640GB and 1TB for new EcoGreen hard drives, so I think it's assured that top two models are going to use 320/333GB platters and very probable that the 320GB model will use the same platter as well making it a single platter drive.
Good news, but given the time it takes samsung to bring out new drives folks, especially ones in the US like me, are better off buying WD green series.

Well, in Portugal that difference is even greater... You can actually get a 1TB Samsung F1 for about €10~20 more than a 750GB GP... (~€140 versus €120). 1TB GP drives are at least €190 a pop, but most stores still carry it above the €200 mark, which is VERY steep.oberbimbo wrote:Very good news, F1 have been consistently 15% cheaper than the Greenpowers for a while now in Switzerland
I really want big silent drives, but those prices are just nuts...
5400rpm 1TB Samsung drives would be sweet. I'll subscribe to this thread to check on these ones...
Btw, how do the standard F1s fare versus the 321KJ, noise-wise? I have a couple of 321s, and they're the most silent drives I've EVER (not) heard...
Cheers.

This is slightly besides the point, but maybe it will help you still: I have a F1 and a GreenPower both in USB enclosures (not the same type though). The GreenPower is significantly less noisy (vibrates less which is a big part of it I guess, even though its in a plastic enclosure), but the F1 is still less noisy than an 500GB SpinPoint in the machine itself... For a 7200 device, the F1 is very good though, I don't think I've heard as silent since the Barracuda IV days.
Interestingly, the by far cheapest per GB price in Switzerland is the 640GB WD... So there may yet be hope for cheaper 3 platter 1TB GPs...

That actually helps, thank you. The 500GB SpinPoint is probably (almost certainly) from the same family as the 321KJ, which means I probably won't hear either the F1 or the GP drives.oberbimbo wrote:This is slightly besides the point, but maybe it will help you still: I have a F1 and a GreenPower both in USB enclosures (not the same type though). Damn, those drives are silent...
Btw, X2 on the "Thanks for the heads up lobuni!" sentence.
Cheers.
