quiet 400gb or more

Post by xev » Wed May 14, 2008 10:39 pm

I'm looking for a relatively large hdd that performs well and is pretty quiet. doesnt have to be the quietest but is preferably quieter than my seagate barracuda 7200.10 200gb.

My favorite SPCR recommended quiet HD is the 500GB Samsung HD501LJ. Here in the USA the HD501LJ can be purchased for as low as $85.

I have a HD401LJ, HD501LJ and a WD6400AAKS. The overall noise of all three drives are very similar, particularly idle noise. Seeks are very similar too, there are differences but nothing that could be heard over couple of very quiet fans in a closed computer case. However there is a difference between the WD and Samsung and that is the vibration. The WD has very little or no vibration at idle or during seek times, very impressive. The Samy vibrates very little too but WD is a step above, and if you are not gonna soft mount the hard drives the WD would be noticeably quieter. i am getting a HD103UJ 1TB next week and I like to see how that performs compared to the HDs I have tested.

i am really interested in how the HD103UJ goes for you. 1tb is a good size for me since i dont want too many hdds in my case.

Sorry but I think I'm gonna go with the HD753LJ. They are on sale for $108 while the HD103UJ is $190

I'm very happy with the Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS.

2 platters. It runs cool, quiet and feels very quick. The only downside I can think of is that Newegg's price has gone up $5 in the last couple weeks.

Since they didn't have any shipping rates listed, I tested their checkout with an Ontario address, and the least expensive shipping option was over $15. Add in tax, and it works out to almost $111 CAD ($112 USD). I don't live in Canada anyway, but I just thought I'd point that out. : P
