I believe that the WD5000AACS is quieter. It is the Green Power model. I have one and like it a lot. Not as slow as one might suspect.

The WD5000AACS is the OEM model number (no box, no cables, etc). It also comes in retail packaging known as the WD 500 GB Green Power drive (different model number). The box is green. Available at most electronics or office supply stores. Also available via internet sites like Newegg.com.

The retail packaging has a nice WD SATA cable that is customized for WD drives, and provides a more secure connection at the drive end.

There are interesting options in the 640GB capacity point. I would look at the Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS for speed and Caviar Green WD6400AACS for low power/heat.

I would second this recomendation. The WD6400AAKS should be your first choice. It's the only 640GB made by Western Digital.

But if my only choices were the ones you mentioned, the Samsung and Western Digital would probably be about the same. Here is a thread comparing the WD5000AAKS and HD501LJ. Make your decision on price. Note that the Seagate will not be as quiet and should be avoided.

I have the WD5000AAKS and it has quite a lot of idle noise (wind noise).
I will probably replace it with a Green Power model.
