Samsung drives, drive me nuts!

Post by timbalcombe » Thu Aug 28, 2008 2:50 pm

Man, WTF is up with these drives?
Had 2 now, a 160HDJJ and now a 501LJ

I have an antec P182.
All was well for a while in its upper HD bay untill I needed to install a fan there to cool a GFX card.
Moved it to the bottom cage and it was really vibrating and noiser on seeks and writes.
Ok I thought, I'll get a smart drive.
Cured the seek noise (sometimes), but it seems to chatter in this enclosure.
Mounted that in the 5.25 bay, and the resonance was diving me nuts. Not so much sitting next to it, but when I was downstairs (I have wooden floors) it was making the whole place hummmmmmmmmmm.
Pissed off with this that so I've placed it on some foam in the bootom of the case. Boom, vibration gone, but the chatter is back.
It's lie the slightest movement on these drives can knock something outta whack. i dont know.
So... what is the best drive at the mo for vibration? The WD 750's with there Vibration sensor malarky.
Should I wait for SSD to come down in price?
Anyone like the noisevibes setup?
You just can't bloddy win can you?

I've got two 501LJs in a P182 and I can't hear them. Suspension ftw.

Like blackworx, I have 3 Samsung drives, all three suspended, my rig being under my desk, and I can't hear them at all. 100% happy with them.

My brother and I both got HD501LJs at the same time.

His is mounted in a P182 using the silicone buffers. All ok.

Mine is hard-mounted in a cheap case and I still don't get any noises or vibration like what you're describing.

I have 10 501LJ's in my stacker, coolermaster 4in3 modules, no problems with vibration - apart from the side panel rattling from time to time.
