WD Caviar Green Power 1000GB - WD10EADS

Post by hashbang » Wed Sep 17, 2008 5:45 am

Hi!

Does anyone know anything about this hard dive? How is it different from WD10EACS? It is listed by many retailers, but I couldn't find any technical info.

WD GP has already been reviewed at this site:

Apparently it's a variant with a bigger buffer size of 32MB. As a side benefit, it may also guarantee you 333GB platters.

I have one in an external drive. Its essentiually just a 3 platter version of the old GP 1TB drive, its phasing out the 4 platter one. Slightly faster I believe (although still slower than other 1TB drives because of the rpm) and similar noise levels (possibly slightly lower due to the one less platter and lower weight).

It has been reported that newer WD10EACS revisions have 3 platter design too. Is it just the cache size that makes the difference? It's strange that WD10EADS isn't listed listed on WD's web site.

BTW, did someone had a chance to compare 3 and 4 platter versions side by side? Is there any significant difference in noise, vibrations and speed?

There's a thread in here comparing the three and four platter versions of the WD10EACS and there was a performance boost with the three platter version.

Thanks for the notice! This thread is here:

Also, in this thread a user makes a statement about noise and vibrations:
