Word on Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB?

Post by ST » Wed Oct 08, 2008 10:23 am

I'm running out of room already on my 5TB media server / htpc, and am considering upgrading to these new Seagate 1.5TB HDD. Whats the word on their performance and noise levels? Are these 3 platter drives? TIA

Nope, this one has 4 375GB platters. It's really fast. I'm using them in an unRAID server and during parity check, I got around 83MB/s and that's because parity was slowed down by a Samsung Spinpoint F 1TB drive in my array at some point. Another guy who was using all-1.5TB drives in his system got 90MB/s during parity check. The Seagate 1.5TB was definitely noisier than the Samsung Spinpoint F 1TB and temps reported by the Seagate are 7~10C higher than the Samsung. I had to add some fans to the case to keep it below 50C (35C room temp) so that added to the noise as well. Personally I wouldn't put 4 of these (6TB) in an HTPC.

Just FYI - according to newegg user comments these drives may not be very reliable. Well, similar problems seem arise with many of bigger (640GB+) drives - IMHO manufacturers are not quite ready to produce such drives (or 300GB+ platters) yet.

Techreport has reviewed Seagate 1.5TB drive days ago. It comprises 4 375GB platters and seems to be a mediocre HD in terms of noise and performance, but a huge capacity boost compared to other HDs in review.

I have been trying to get a guy I work with to benchmark one using HD Tach before he puts the into a RAID-5 array.

He is now away for 1-2 weeks, but may find the time for that benchmark + some subjective noise measurements against some 1TB Seagate 7200.11's and some 1TB Samsung drives.
