Velociraptor Icepacks for SPCR server

Post by MikeC » Sat Jan 10, 2009 12:50 pm

There must be some folks who -- like all the SPCR staff who have VRs -- run them w/o the icepacks. If any of you would like to help SPCR by donating your now idle Icepack, pls let me know or post here. We have a very specific application: To install 2.5" SAS drives into a 1U rack case with backplane for 3.5" drives. We only need 2.

You'd need the newer backplane-compatible icepacks, correct?

Yes, we need the newer ones, or the connectors don't line up. We need four of these, because the ones we have are the older style.

I'm making the assumption that the second generation ice-pack is removable. Anyone?

Here's a visual of the type needed:

Richard.

Anyone else out there able to donate!?

Regards,
Richard.

I have at least one that is idle and 1 that is attached but will soon make its way into a system once I get some of those 2.5" no-vibe trays.

Is this the right version:

Edit: Oh, I see, the backplane ready version has connectors embedded onto the IcePack. I wish my version was one of those ;)

Sorry. That version does not place the connectors in the standard location.
Compare with a standard 3.5" drive and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks anyway.

A bit OT but the fact that you got one should mean that the icepacks are removable right?

I'm guessing warranty is void when they are removed?

Yes. It's either void, or very void, depending on how you remove your heatsink.

I had no idea that Velociraptor icepacks can be removed without damage. Can these be used as generic 2.5" to 3.5" adapters?

Icy Dock makes a hotplug compatible 2.5 to 3.5 adapter. You can buy them easily.
