Samsung F2 1TB false advertising!!

Post by vicx » Sun Mar 08, 2009 6:19 pm

Seeing Samsung F2 1TB drives advertised as HD103UI. Does anyone actually the F2 1TB drives yet or is this dodgy advertising by sellers. I would have thought the F2 would come with a new model designator.

The HD103UI is an F1 EcoGreen 5400rpm drive.

The F2 should be designated as HD103SI it seems.

No hits on staticICE for them though.

Been a slow day so I spent some time on this.

The F2 drives do seem to be unavailable and yet advertised as available in Australia under OLD designators. Ex. Samsung F2 HD103UI is advertised on a few sites. Curiously the drives I bought last week were advertised as Samsung 1TB 500GB per platter Silencer Series HD103UI.

Today I weighed each of my drives and they within 1gm of 650gm apiece. The only contemporary models that match this weight are the 1.5TB F2 - 153UI and 154UI.

Could be the drives I bought were new F2 drives with a platter disabled or running lower density on three platters? It doesn't look like I got the quieter running F2 HD103SI 2 platters for 1TB I was after because it is 640gm on the Samsung site.

What model # does it say on the drives? That will be what you got.

Most likely the place you purchased them from incorrectly advertised the drives as the F2 models, while shipping you the F1 model.

The F2 drives do have new model #s...

Well actually you are right; they are not F2 drives but it is a little bit interesting. You've seen lcd panel lottery now welcome to hard drive lottery.

These drives I bought last week.

Got pics of these drives from tomshardware.de. Highlighting is mine.

A common thing?

I guess the only way to know if these drives are spinnin at 5400 instead of 7200 is to bench them. I was thinking of taking them back so I haven't plugged them in yet.

I wouldn't mind more HE103UJ drives - they normally come with a 7 year warranty.
