New Seagate 4200RPM Drive?

Post by zodaex » Sat Mar 28, 2009 8:21 pm

http://www.pacificgeek.com/product.asp? ... 202&S=1000

Does anybody know anything about this drive? I Was looking at ultra quiet 2.5 inch drives and this one seems like it would be silent. Has anybody used one? I cant find any reviews or benchies.

Edit: Can anybody verify this drive exists? I can't find mention of it on seagate's site. Im thinking the idiots at pacific geek made a typo......

A google search for the model number turns up that it's a 5400.3 model, running at 5400rpm. Nothing special.

EDIT: Hmm..among all the links saying "5400.3" there's also http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?v ... cale=en-US
Looks funny, but says 4200.

Fujitsu has a 400GB and a 500GB sata 2.5" drive, but it's 12.5mm instead of 9.5mm. So I guess it wont fit in your laptop. If you want check Toshiba's single plater 250GB 2.5" hdd. It claims 19db in idle and 20db in seek, but it is a 5400rpm drive. Fujitsu claims 21db in idle.

I hardly see the point in slowing the spindle speed down any further. My Acer Extensa laptop came with a 160GB Hitachi 5K250 5400 rpm hard drive, and I've since swapped in a 320GB Hitachi 7K320 7200 rpm drive, and it just makes enough noise so that I can actually hear it when the hard drive spins down. The 160GB one has moved into my secondary desktop as the main drive to allow the noisy Seagate 7200.9 500GB drive to spin down most of the time. Even running alone with just the slowed down Nexus fans in my main system, it's inaudible from more than a foot or two away, even at night in this quiet room. It's actually a bit quieter than the 100GB 4200 rpm Toshiba that came in my previous Acer Aspire laptop, and over 2x as fast in nearly every measure.
