Black? Blue? Green? I want to get a new hard drive, this will by the only hard drive in my system so it can't be some slow piece of crap (Green is the slowest) but it can't be some loud mofo (Black?) So in your opinions which one should I go for? I have pretty much confirmed that they all are quieter and faster than my current WD 80GB SATA (oldish, like 2005?)

IMO, Blue strikes a good balance and is quiet enough for use in a near-silent PC.

I just installed my new 3-platter Caviar Green WD10EADS and it seems to be the loudest hard drive I've had in a long time--much louder than the "Blue" WD6400AAKS. My quietest drive is actually a Black--a 2-platter Scorpio Black. Maybe it is all sample variation, so YMMV.

The two Blues I have (actually one was prior to being named 'Blue') are both quiet and fast.
Green's are supposed to be quietest/low power, Black's are performance oriented, and the Blues are the compromise solution.
Best way to put it, I will buy more Blues as it stands right now.

Seems like you answered your own question

Blue & Black both have 2 platters at 7200rpm, right? So any noise difference should be the same as sample variance between 2 of the same model. If you think a little more speed and longer warranty are worth $20, I see no reason to dismiss the Black for noise.

On the WD site, 640 GB Blue and 640 GB Black have the same acoustic specs (and I think it should be apples-to-apples as the manufacturer is always WD).

I purchased a 640gb blue model about a month ago. It is without question much quieter than my single-platter 160gb Seagate drive in pretty much every measure I can discern. I'm very pleased with it. I got 3 years out of my 160gb drive before I finally managed to fill it up, so if I can get 3 years out of my WD drive then hopefully the WD's replacement will be a SSD.
