loud seek with HITACHI Travelstar 5K250

Post by fred9 » Sat Apr 18, 2009 4:54 pm

I built a quiet system a few years ago and recently needed more storage. I went with the $40 rebate Hitachi (quit laughing) and now I'm not happy with the whine at seek (it is suspended). What should I buy at Newegg? I don't need 500GB just a quiet HHD. Speed is not important either. Thanks,

My experience with the 160GB Hitachi Travelstar 5K250 (yes, a 5K250, not a 5K160) that came in my Acer Extensa laptop was actually quite pleasant. My guess is that your particular sample is one of the bad ones. I've since replaced it with a 7K320 320GB, but will be utilising it in a secondary system soon. The 7K320 is a touch louder at idle, but both share the same fairly quiet seeks (plastic laptop cases aren't the best for noise attenuation). That said, if it weren't for the outstanding deal on this 7K320 ($57.50 total shipped AR), I would have gone for a WD Scorpio.

The ultimate combination is to use something like the Scythe Quiet Drive 2.5" with your Hitachi. Then suspend the final product (it'll be of 3.5" size).
