Samsung EcoGreen F2 1.5 TB - Have anyone tried it?
I just noticed that PixMania (seems like a crap store unfortunately) has started selling this drive now for a reasonable price in Sweden (shipped from France). Has anyone tried them? I'm looking for a drive to replace my 200GB Samsung drive (SP2004C). Since I'm very happy with my two 500GB (HD510LJ) and my 1 TB (HD103UJ) drives I'm looking for Samsung HDD again.

From the review it seems to have a pretty decent write and read speed for a 5400 rpm drive. Not as good as the F1 1 TB though. I'm interested to know if anyone have tried it yet?

Would You like to know precisely about 1,5TB model or generally about F2 serie ?
Here You have topics about F2:

I was wondering of somone had used it. First I thought it was still just a paper launch. I read a bit about the 500 GB model, probably the first of your links. I'll check out the thread about the 1 TB one though.mac79 wrote:Would You like to know precisely about 1,5TB model or generally about F2 serie ?

Nice. Free shipping for Sweclockers members from inet is always nice. I think I'll mail Dustin and Webhallen and see what they say.Fred wrote:I mailed inet.se about the F2 HDD's. They said that they will most likely get them, but their distributor had no date for when that would happen (so most likely not in a while).
I guess i'll be waiting until they get it... my brother tells me not to trust pixmania. : P
Has no one gotten one of these yet?
EDIT: I mailed Dustin, Webhallen and Komplett.
Dustin now has them listed, not in stock though.
Yeah, I noticed that. The price is a bit higher as well. I'll wait until they have them in stock at least. If some of the other stores got them too it would be even nicer though as we might see some competitive pricing then hopefully.Fred wrote:Dustin now has them listed, not in stock though.
Some store called Teknikhallen claims to have it in stock now. I've never shopped from them before though.

Three Samsung drives participating in "Hard Drives, Yesterday And Today: From 500 GB To 1.5 TB" at THG.
2007: 500 GB Spinpoint T166 (HD501LJ)
2008: 1000 GB Spinpoint F1 EcoGreen (HD103UI)
2009: 1500 GB Spinpoint F2 EcoGreen (HD154UI)
2007: 500 GB Spinpoint T166 (HD501LJ)
2008: 1000 GB Spinpoint F1 EcoGreen (HD103UI)
2009: 1500 GB Spinpoint F2 EcoGreen (HD154UI)
My quick impressions: with case open and drive sitting on floor idle noise is easily audible. Noise character is pleasant and perceivable volume is a bit higher than Antec Tricool@5v.
If you have very low noise fan(s), you'll want to take the last step. With drive placed into Scythe box, idle noise becomes almost inaudible. With this setup I found seek/write noises a bit annoing. Somehow Samsung seeks feel a bit rough when compared to WD Blue. I'm not sure that would I want to use Samsung as a system drive, but it seems to make a very silent storage drive when paired with hdd box.
Some benches with drive almost full, AAM@128:

The Samsung 1.5TB is finally listed at Newegg. Price isn't too bad, but I'll wait a bit for a sale... Hopefully, it'll drop to $110 or less. Right now it's at $119.99 with free ship.

Yep 5400rpm.
I receive two of them HD154UI (1,500,301,910,016 bytes)
Cold and silent. It used as data holder, max. performance not needed.
Before using hdisks in production, check the whole hdisk for bad blocks.
I use # badblocks -swv /dev/<fresh new disk without data yet>
But sadly, one of two has too much errors for my taste:
I will raise a RMA ticket.

It has to be noisier. 3 platters vs 1. How much? Hard to say, Samsung's own specs state 2.2/2.7 bels idle/seek for the 500gb, 2.5/2.8 bels for 1.5tb. Suggests at least 3 dBA/1m louder at idle, 1 dBA+ in seek -- possibly more, because bels power and dBA/1m do not correlate linearly.tkorsvold wrote:The Samsung 1.5TB is looking good, but I'm still unsure of the noise - would it be much worse than the 500GB edition?

I always had trouble reading SMART attributes. Which attribute are you talking about? Are you talking about Reallocated Sector count or Reported_Uncorrect?user wrote:Yep 5400rpm.

I just thought I'd chime in real quick. I bought two of these things to replace some Samsung HD501LJ drives and I'm very happy with the (lack of) noise coming from both drives. They are admirably quiet. The seek noise is audible at close distances but not offensive. Any sound they make while spinning is of no consequence whatsoever.
Did the other drive report any reallocated sectors?user wrote:Yep 5400rpm.

EDIT: It's now available from WeSellCD in Sweden as well. They listed the cache wrong though, 16MB instead of 32MB but they called it HD154UI. If it was 16MB it should be called HD153UI according to samsung. I emailed the store about it though. We'll see what they say.
EDIT 2: They fixed it now.

Got one of these 5400rpm F2's and it sounds fairly quiet so far. Going to compare them to the F1's later but first impression is that it is at least as quiet if not more.
As for Pixmania, never had any problems with them and I have ordered significant items like Pioneer plasma TV's, i7 CPU's etc. But I only buy from them based on cost - I'm UK based so the Pixmania European prices were relatively good.
p.s. it's £76.81 including tax, from scan.co.uk. And if you have the free shipping option that's all you pay.

It says you have two of them in link in your sig. Did both arrive without SMART-errors?echn111 wrote:Got one of these 5400rpm F2's and it sounds fairly quiet so far. Going to compare them to the F1's later but first impression is that it is at least as quiet if not more.

very interesting test:
Life After 1 TB: Seven Hard Disk Drives with 1.5 TB and 2 TB Storage Capacity
btw, is that true that Samsung drives often comes with few reallocated sectors?
