My samsung dvd writer went south
I need a new one. I was looking at the Asus 22LB1T. Are asus drives known to be as quiet as samsung ones and do they burn as well?
Thanks

I use Asus DVD drives almost exclusively, they are pretty quiet. My only Samsung drive is an external writer, I'd say the noise levels are roughly the same.

I have one of each, Sammie and Asus, and I can't say I hear a difference.

No idea. I use the LG SuperMulti ones. They're usually just a couple dollars more than the Samsung drives. I haven't noticed them being loud, but I don't use them often and they're behind case doors.

I haven't used LG drives in a long time, but they used to be pretty loud, which is why I switched to Asus.

I have an Asus DRW-1814BLT (the one with the Quiet Track technology) and it's a very quiet drive as long as it's mount is horizontally (if mounted vertically, the vibration it generates is unbearable). I've heard that the newer Asus drives aren't as quiet as the old DRW-1814BLT but they are still pretty good overall.

I have an Asus optical drive on a file server, but I have never used it other than to initially install the OS. Just about any drive will be sufficiently quiet with Nero Drive Speed or equivalent. There are not any drives that operate at full speed that are quiet enough for most spcr members.

I don't like Samsung ODD for their not so good media compatibility, and at that my superb as a burner Nec-Sony is completely inaudible at x2 DVD speed. You can't cheat the physics on higher speeds -- there MUST be the noise. I heard also Quiet Track labeled Asus(Pioneer) and that was pretty silent. Check this
resource for more details.
