Big SATA disk choices?

Post by Hezu » Tue Jun 09, 2009 11:02 am

My primary computer's disk space is once again starting to run low (main reason must be frequent DVB-recordings and far too infrequent watching of those recorded TV programs), so I think I need to start planning on hard drive shopping. Given that with this disk space expansion I wish also to replace pair of 500 GB Samsung HDDs, the sizes I'm interested in are 1.5 or 2 TB. The choices in these sizes seem to be Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5 TB, Seagate Barracuda LowPower 1.5 and 2 TB, Samsung EcoGreen F2 1.5 TB, Western Digital GP 1.5 and 2 TB. Given that the two terabyte models seem still carry unbearable premium in size/price-ratio, I guess the choice must be made within 1.5 TB models. 7200.11 seems to have the best availabity and price since it is older model, but that older design is also its disadvantage. WD GP also seems to reasonably easily available albeit it is slightly more expensive than the other alternatives. At least the WD GP 2 TB model has gained good reviews, but what about this slightly smaller model? And then what about these new Seagate LP and Samsung F2 models? The Finnish prices I have seen for them seem to be quite afordable (~ €125), but so far I haven't noticed either in stock anywhere.
So any opinions?

My local PC hardware store here in England has the 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 for sale at £98 inclusive of VAT, around €114 but the 2TB models start at around double that price so a similar situation to yours.

This particular 1.5TB drive has been reviewed by SPCR see

The Seagate Barracuda LP series seems to be a smart choise -- 123/94/56Mb linear transfer rate. And it is quiet too, geting between Samsung (1st place) and WD(2-nd place).

But but but we don't have yet much statistics.

I would stay away from 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11. It's very noisy when compared to my 640GB Caviar Blue. In fact I ordered 1.5TB Samsung F2 from Germany to replace the Seagate. I will report back when I get the Samsung.
