I ran across these in local hardware web store:
http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datashe ... uda_lp.pdf

It would seem Seagate has listened to users and provided 5900rpm drives at capacity points of 1, 1.5 and 2 terabytes.

Very nice, I already put in order for the 1.5T model.

Then give us know of your experience with this big ...FISH :D

Every HDD vendor datasheet is flawless, and every time, again and again, we meet the severe reality that quite differs from the paper claims ;)

The drive arrived today.

Because the disk went to our home server, not to any workstation, I did only some brief testing on the acoustics.

I tested the 1.5T Barracuda Low Power against couple of years old 120G Barracuda 7200.7. Overall the LP model sounds smoother and more benign, but it's only a touch quieter than it's 7200 ancestor. Both drives are very quiet and even in a quite room with all openings closed I had to go close to properly hear them when idle.

Seeks were sharper and more easy to distinguish on the LP model, while they did not sound any louder than 7200.7. So all in all, in terms of airborne noise LP bests the 7200rpm drive only with a tiny bit.

The difference in vibration between these two units is nothing short of dramatic. I held both drives in my hands to test this and I had to double-check the LP drive was indeed running. The 7200.7 vibrates like you've used hard drives to do, but LP does not. I could feel a very subtle vibration in the drive when I concentrated to it, but it was very, very weak overall.

This is the first 3.5" drive I could install on just some silicon grommets instead of suspension/rubber foam.
