Replacing Samsung T166 500GB drives

Post by zenith » Thu Dec 03, 2009 4:02 pm

I got three drives in my file server from Samsung. Those are of T166 series: HD501LJ, 500GB each. I even think they might have Nidec motors. I am very satisfied with both the lack of vibrations and quietness.

Are there any new Samsung drives with Nidec motors available? I am looking for drives of at least 1TB and performance wise no worse than the drives I already have. However, as little vibrations as possible and reliability comes first.

Reading in the forums it seems that both F3 and F2 EcoGreen are good candidates. Right now the F3 seems more tempting, because of 7200rpm. However, quite probably the F2 has better properties when it comes to a noise and vibration? And probably the F2 has good platter density so the lower access time might not be noticeable?

Both are very quiet, and the performance is almost the same. The F2 uses less power and runs cooler.

I have three HD501LJ drives and two of the HD103SJ model in my system. The new 1TB drives are much faster and produce less noise by both vibration and idle whine. I think all five use JVC motors but I could be mistaken(and am not at home to check).
