Most Quiet way to achive ~1TB storage?

Post by Drawmly » Wed Jun 23, 2010 2:06 pm

Hey guys. My first post here so let me know if I'm in the wrong forum part.
I'm soon going to buy a new desktop-computer which I will water-cool with very silent fans with a fan-controller. So I need some really quiet storage solution that is hopefully inaudible inside a case. I live in a suburb area so the ambient sound level is really low, so my goal is to make the computer completely silent :) I will use an SSD for the system partition.
Right now I have 1TB storage capacity and that is about what I feel comfortable with. So how do I get 1TB the most quiet way? 3,5" or 2,5" drives? 5400 RPM is quite obvious I guess. One HDD drive with several platters or several HDD drives with 1 platter each?
At first I was thinking of going with just a normal 1TB 3,5" 5400RPM'er, but then I thought that maybe 2 or 3 2,5" drives might be quieter? Doing raid 5 with 3 2,5" would be sweet for both performance and security I guess :)
What do you guys think?

Samsung F2 1tb and if you don't mind spending a bit extra then also purchase a Scythe Quiet Drive but it needs to be softmounted, preferably on foam.

Two things: 5400RPM and 2-platter. I had a 1TB 7200RPM 3-platter Samsung that was pretty loud, especially before suspension. Suspending it helped quite a bit, but getting rid of it and replacing it with a 2-platter 5400RPM 1TB drive helped even more. The HD103SI I have now is very quiet.

What's the difference between the F2 103SI and the F1 103UI? I see the latter is £10 more, so I'm curious why as the specs all look the same.
