I need a new HDD.

Yo!

Tommorrow I need to buy a new HDD because one of my Seagate HDDs, has fell after about 2 years with 450Gb of data on it... The firmware problem of 7200.11 series... What do you recommend, silent and fast. I put my eyes over the Western Digital Blue 1TB WD10EALS.

You were ok with the Seagate... almost any other hdd will be quieter.

WD blue's are a nice compromise of transfer rates and quietness...and the 1tb is a good call. Just about the best storage per dollar money can buy.

7200.11 is quite silent, on par with old AAKS. I bought both of them at that time, 7200.11 and AAKS and Seagate was the most silent....

the WD10EALS i bought seem to have a little...noise. But my guess is this noise must be a normal thing for steady 7200rpm hard disks, and also that every drives are unique in the way that every drives are made differently, they are not 100% built identically, there's always a percentage...like if you order a pack of 3 of the same drive, one might sound just a little quieter, one can be just a little noisier and one could create a lot of vibrations. (or if you check into a Dollar store for plusg toys, you WILL notice that all of them have something different

So like i said, when you put your ear in the front of the case, you can hear some kind of spinning noise, maybe because the drive doesn't make much vibrations so you tend to hear more "mechanical" noises from it. But that's my guess though.

I saw a lot of peoples complaining on Newegg about this HDD model though, saying they were dead on arrival or already had bad sectors on them, etc...mine seem to be fine as i type this. I remember using Speedfan's "in-depth" online analysis on this drive, the Performance was at 98% and then days later, dropped to 97%, maybe because it lowered the temperature's lowest value recorded in the HDD's SMART data. (112 for 35 Celcius, that's the maximum i've seen on this hard disk yet).

Ah yes, they seem to be loud when being powered on and reaching their 7200rpm speed. Thanks god they don't sound like this all the time!

So far, no big problem with it.

Any idea on drowing a HDD spinning noise? a low-spinning Noctua NF-S12B FLX fan in front of it maybe?
