I've read good reviews on their silence in DVRs and HTPCs, but can anyone attest to their acoustics when there's nothing but air between the drive and your ear?

I have a 500 gb external WD drive, it's quiet compared to the other 500gb external from Seagate. Compared to a ssd i'm guessing it's not that quiet.
In any case, i would recommand you this brand , yes. This or a Samsung. Now if you want a traditional drive and real quiet you have to look at the specs in great depth: how many platters (the less the better) , and the RPM (5400 vs 7200) essentially.
