SSD(system) + 1,5 TB WD green (games + storge)

Post by zoran89 » Wed Nov 10, 2010 12:34 pm

In the future (when $$ situation slightly improves) i am planning on getting 128 gb ssd to use for windows 7 system and 1 or 2 1,5tb wd eco greens... Now my question is this.....becouse most of the games are very large now days....how much difference will there be if i run them from 5400 hdd instead of 7200 samsung 1tb ?? I am not hard core gamer....i play maybe 3-4 hours a week... when i install windows and all the programs there isnt going to bee that much space on ssd....and i think i dont want to install game play it...then uninstal just to play different one...

128GB will be enough for windows and MANY games !!
Just to give you an example, I have W7 ultimate with Office (full install), anti virus, all my email, MS development tools, Eclipse, and a bunch of more stuff (printer drivers, monitoring software, IM...) installed. On top of that, on the gaming side, I have COD4, NFS Most Wanted, UT2004, Team Nations, Wolfenstein and Medal of Honor installed.
And I have 12GB left of my SSD.
And the best part is, it's only an 80GB SSD

Yeah, games on the SSD.

If you have GBs or TBs of movies, music, etc keep those files on the 5400 RPM drives. Don't worry about the 5400 RPM drives slowing you down. Keep anything you truly touch on a daily basis on the SSD.

fwiw the current price on the cheapest 128GB SSDs I'd consider are (in US$)

Corsair Nova 128GB ~$220 ~$1.72/GB
Crucial M225 128GB ~$229 ~$1.79/GB

If you wait long enough those may sell out (or in your country they may not be available) if so I'd be looking at

Crucial C300 128GB ~$270 ~$2.11/GB
Samsung 470 128GB ~$306 ~$2.39/GB
Intel X25-M 160GB ~$438 ~$2.74/GB

All of these drives are currently more expensive but could drop in price significantly in just a few months (early 2011).

SSD hard disk 128Gb OCZ

i can get this for under 200$ from a friend of a friend :-)......here in croatia the cheapest 128 gb ssd is 400$ .....the math is simple....price in US dollars = price in EURO + 20-30 % ;.).....that means if something costs 10$ in US it will cost 13€ here....

ocz has sold dozens of different models of 128GB SSDs. You'll have to be more specific.

Vertex
Vertex 2
Vertex 2 EX
Vertex 2 Pro
Agility
Agility 2
Agility 2 EX
Onyx
Onyx 2

and on and on and on OCZ is one of those companies that makes dozens of models every year and they've made drives for several years.

Be very careful, don't buy from a friend of a friend on a used SSD because

1. It may be a very slow model (the model names are confusing and use different internals even within the same series name)

2. It can be in a condition from use that will severely slow it down even if it is a good model.

safest bet is to wait until prices drop after the new year and buy a new drive with warranty and refund available.

You could always buy a smaller SSD (64GB/80GB) for Windows/Programs and use something like a 640GB/1TB Caviar Blue just for games.

It is the preferred performance/value storage setup of most DIY PC builders these days.
