Recommendations for a bigger drive

Post by jerryk » Thu Aug 21, 2003 2:56 pm

Hi,

I currently have a Barracuda IV (80 Gbyte) in my system. I love the fact that it makes virtually no noise. But, I am close to filling the drive. What are my options for a bigger drive, but still "silent" drive?

Thanks,

Jerry

I haven't got one (yet), but the Samsung SP1614P has impressed a few people. The 2MB version is reviewed on the main site a while back. I believe it's not as silent as a Barracuda IV, but pretty close.

My Maxtor 120GB Ultra with FDB is fairly decent once I turned on AAM, but can't compare with the cuda IV (I have that in another system). But that may be because my PSU fan is noisier (Enermax *sigh* need to replace it with the 120mm Fortron that's been sitting around). Before that the case fans was drowning out the PSU fan. This quest is doing big damage to my credit card...

I got the Samsung 1604 a few weeks ago and it's just a tiny bit louder than my 80GB Cuda IV's when they're sitting out on my workbench. Now that it's in the case I can't hear the difference. I can just barely make out the seeks, just like the Cuda IV that it replaced.

The new 8MB cache version (SP1614N) is available now at Newegg among other places.

Here's MikeC's review of the SP1604N.
