Seagate Archive 8TB HD quiet?

Any experience with the 8TB drive? I am looking into using it to strore my movies and the offer better bang for buck than the 6TB WD Red I am using now, but I can find no mention on how quiet they are?
It is for a dedicated WHS11 box running EMBY server and has as of now 10 drives, most in RAID1 for my movie collection.

Yes it will. The new test space is a fully underground 600'+ concrete basement -- floor & walls are concrete. Ceiling is the underside of the floor above, a portion of which is being insulated now. Without any acoustic treatment & one pretty quiet PC going on the other side of the room, the SPL is 13-14 dBA. Pulling the fans from the acoustic measurement PC might drop it a bit further, but I'm going to put up sound absorbing "blue fill" baffles before doing that.

The new space is about 4-5 dBA quieter than the old room before treatment. Mostly because of the damping underground & because there are no sources of noise around here -- I'm now living on an island 30 miles from Vancouver, in the Georgia Strait between Vanc & Vancouver Island. There are small float planes that fly overhead from time to time, maybe 10x a day, but the sound of each does not last long.

I'm building modular sound absorbing baffles, like thick dividers in open offices. They will be on wheels, moved out of the way when not needed, and stackable. I built the first pair -- roughly 4.5' tall, 4' wide, >1' deep. Sort of like a deep bookcase. Another one goes on top of this, same dimensions but 3' tall. I'll build 6 pairs to start. This will be enough for a circular space of 9~10' diameter with very low reflection. I will position it a good distance from the walls. It should bring the SPL down to 10 dBA or better. If needed, I'll make 2 more pairs of baffles to create an 8' cubic space, or inrease the thickness of the baffles by 50%. There will be a slight gap between the ceiling & the baffles, but from experience, I know this has no effect unless there's noise elsewhere in the room/house.

Bump. I'm in the market for some large capacity drives for my home storage system. I just bought a WD RED Pro for work and the seeks are really loud. I'm looking to get 4 drives in the 6 to 8 TB range and it would be nice to know which are not a huge regression in noise before dropping $1,200+.

Cool beans, thanks for the info. Any clue if the Pro versions of the drives have similar acoustics? The non-Pro is rated at 2.7 to 3.2 bels for the larger sizes, but the Pro doesn't list anything for acoustics. I'm a sucker for the extra warranty but I also want it to be nearly silent.

Salt Spring Island. And of course, now that we're in the country surrounded by umpteen trees & hills, the whole coast is being hit with the stormiest coldest winter in years, maybe decades. Half dozen powerouts so far, burned through at least a cord of firewood already, and there's several trees blown down by wind on the property, probably good enough supply for next winter!

I lived on Vancouver Island (Qualicum Beach) off and on for several years, and remember the blizzard of December 1996. I'm sure the locals on Saltspring can tell you about that one. The snow from the storm shut everyone in over most of Vancouver Island for about a week.

Yeah, this winter it's been really cold and stormy all up and down the west coast. I have friends on Denman Island, and others in Oregon, who are reporting the same thing. Here in Calgary, we've been in a deep freeze for nearly a month.

Maybe I misunderstood your quick comments, I hope you'll come back with us when the storm will calm down: at any rate, I just (yesterday) picked up a Seagate IronWolf 8TB – ST8000VN0022, and it's noticeably noisier than the 5400rpm 6TB WD Red - WD60EFRX, to say, particularly on idle (and the 6TB Red is already clearly more noticeable than the previous 3-4TB Reds)... well, I'm returning it, maybe I'm too demanding but to me it's unsuitable for a desktop mounting.

I'm on the search of a quiet desktop hdd ~3TB. After all these negative comments on "the new reds", I'm looking the WD Blue with good eyes.. Or these new Models by Seagate, yet I'm not pretty sure about which model name. I'm not in a hurry either, just here camping for Mike to drop the bomb

I have to concur. I purchased this drive in December,

and it seemed fine on the bench during assembly, but now that it is being used, it has developed a very pronounced vibration buzz that is even louder than seek noises--it literally vibrates in my hand now. I have used the built-in drive mount of the Fractal Design C (screws in isolation grommets on tray, in cage, in case) as well as suspension and the buzz cannot be eliminated. Worse, Windows 10 does not seem to spin the drive down when idle only when the PC is in sleep or shut down. It is obviously not suitable for near storage in a desktop application (primary storage SSD), so it is being returned for credit.

Any suggestions for its replacement?

My home servers mostly consist of Seagate ST4000DM000 and ST8000AS0002 (SMR, 5 platter, 5900RPM). For backups, I have a couple of WD MyBook 8TB. Subjectively, the ST8000AS0002 has slightly more vibration than the ST4000DM000, but the more noticeable thing was rumbling from seeks. It's completely dampened by putting them in a Novibes III. Both of the WD MyBooks have worse vibration than either of those Seagates.

I recently bought an ST8000NM0055, which is the Enterprise Capacity v5. This is PMR and has 6 platters spinning at 7200RPM, and I expected the noise to be horrendous. I'd bought it for one of my work-related computers for database duties, but it's it's actually by far the smoothest disk I have ever used (better than any 5400RPM or 59x0RPM disk even), so instead it's going to replace the oldest 4TB disk in my 24/7 home server.

I have a couple of cheaper ST8000VX0022 on the way, so I'll see how they compare and I'm curious if there will be a difference, because I believe that the VX0022 (Surveillance) differs from the NM0055 (Enterprise) on a couple of important details. The NM0055 has the motor attached at both ends, whereas all (I believe) the other 8TB drives in the range are only fixed at the bottom, so the overall construction is more rigid and less prone to being slightly unbalanced. There are also additional plates in the NM0055 to reduce turbulence between the platters.

I now have 2x ST8000VX0022 (Skyhawk 8TB) and 2x ST8000DM005 (Barracuda Pro 8TB) - all four samples have horrendous vibration. By far the worst disks I have recent memory of in terms of vibration (great performance though!)

I'd rank a few recent drives I've used as this (good to bad)

ST8000NM0055 (7200RPM 6-platter)
ST4000DM000 (5900RPM 4-platter)
ST8000AS0002 (5900RPM 5-platter)
WD MyBook 8TB (presumably WD Red 8TB)
HGST 7K4000 4TB (7200RPM 5-platter)
HGST A7K1000 1TB (7200RPM 5-platter)
ST8000VX0022/ST8000DM005 (7200RPM 6-platter)

Of course purely subjective - you really need to measure the vibration. I'm not surprised by a 7200RPM 6-platter monster coming out worst - it's just surprising that it's similar sized sibling is at the top.

I went with the WD red 6tb and it is pretty quiet to me. My WHS box in a closet in the living room 2 meters from where I write this. It has 4x4tb WD red and 4x6tb red and two other WD red disks.

However I am running out of space on the server and the WD gold 12tb is a pretty competitive priced compared to the red 10 tb. I fear that the gold is more nosy. The red 6tb is speced to idle/seek 25/28 db and the gold is speced to 20/36 db. The 10tb red is 20/29. 7 db is a lot on a logarithmic scale as 3 db is a doubling.

The is primarily used for storing movies and music and playing from - not heavy file read/write stuff.

Has anyone seen a review of the gold mentioning noise?
Any comments/advice?

I bought a Barracuda Pro 8TB and vibration is terrible.

Then i bought the Scythe Box and put it in.

Now the vibration is limited but i hear a very high pitch sound.

Shame to Scythe ...

As now i am searching for a quiet 8tb drive should i go to a 5900 or the enterprise you recommend ?
