Seagate 7200.7 and vibration

Post by mfeingol » Sun Oct 19, 2003 9:33 am

Last night I deployed a new 80GB 7200.7 to a system that was using whining Maxtor DM+ 60. The whining is now gone, of course, but there isn't blessed silence yet.

The 7200.7 is a vibrating machine. When screwed in, you can feel it vibrating away. Even with ribber grommets in an Evercase, it transfers vibration to the case chassis and causes an irritating low frequency hum.

I have a Cuda V that doesn't vibrate nearly that badly. Is this typical of the 7200.7 models, or should I get it replaced?

Mine is exactly the same, hard mounted it made the whole case emit a low frequency hum. Suspending it made my system so much quieter.

ditto SixToes - even on grommets my case hummed. It is now hanging from elastic bands.

Not sure this is 7200.7 specific: my Fuji 7200 similarly is much quieter suspended. Could be a 7200 issue?

My understanding is that suspended hard drives run hotter. A question to all you guys with suspended 7200.7:

is it hot?

Why I want to know this:

I'm building a new system. 7200.7 is already on its way from the store (sigh). I have yet to decide which case to buy. I'm leaning towards 3700BQE, but if you tell me that suspended 7200.7 is hot, I may opt for 3700AMB, due to its better airflow around the HD cage.

Thanks for your feedback.

Crap, do all the 7200.7's have this problem? I have one on order and will not be able to suspend it due to transporation reason...

Not AFAIK. Do a search for Dru's review here of a 7200.7: his impression was it was cooler then the IV he was comparing to - his measurments showed it was the same. In fact methinks the 'cudas in general tend to be cooler than others.

Mine is real cool: it hangs just behind the front intake fan and reports a SMART temp of 22C, room temp is 18C.

I´d guess it is an issue with all 7200RPM HDD:s. I have had two IBM/Hitachi drives (both 120GXP and 180GXP) and they both made my case hum with an anoying low frequency. I solved the problem by gluing weights to the sides and roof of the case. Now the case is not vibrating as much...

I installed a 7200.7 160 SATA and after I decoupled the drive from the cage I can BARELY hear the seeks. Before decoupling it was V. LOUD.

BUT, drive does run warmer in the BQE case after decoupling (HDD 43C, CPU 32C, Case 25C). I had to increase the rear fan to 7V approx with fanmate, so now the system has gone from inaudible, to audible :(
