SilentDrive™ + WD 7200 Drive = Safe???

I have a WD drive:

Would it still be safe even though they dont recomend using it (too much power disspation...)? I really want to kill the whine and suspension only helps so much, and nothing I make myself is very safe...

PS: Would a fan help any? or maybe keeping the back panel off? Ak, I want this because everything else is too expensive...

Alternative: You could always pick up a Samsung 8mb cache 120G drive and get really low noise with your existing suspension AND improved performance. Newegg is having a blowout sale on Samsung SP1213N for $99. If you get even $50 for your WD you'll do fine -- or just save it as a mobile-tray backup you turn on only when you need to.

Viperoni's advice about SilentDrive + WD is encouraging.einolu wrote:that helps Viperoni, I might risk it.
hmmm, anybody sure that its totally unsafe?

Personally, for obvious temperature-related reasons, I generally only really feel totally safe using the SilentDrive with 5400rpm drives. Molex also recommends a maximum spindle speed of 5400rpm with the SilentDrive enclosure as well.
The SilentDrive kills drive whine better than the SmartDrive enclosure, but you should monitor your drive (under sustained load) in the enclosure for a while at first, to make sure it will never much exceed around 50C max. While the drive manufacturers usually list a safe max temp-spec of around 55C - 60C (your WD has a safe max temp of 55C listed), I personally don't like to see a drive get over about 51C absolute max temp...
