speeddifference?

Post by Tobias » Fri Jan 23, 2004 3:40 am

I am about to buy a new HD (for my new computer, everything but the HD is ready to be installed) but no vendor in town has the Samsung P80 stocked (7200RPM). My question is, how much of a performancehit is it to go with a Samsung V80 (5400RPM), which is stocked and available today, as system-disc? Will I notice the difference? I hope someone can answer rather fast, as I want to build my puter today:)

hey there,

i'm kinda new here but i'll help you out as best i can

i think it will affect it quite a bit especially if it's your system disc your programs and OS will take ~25% longer to load (using very crude logic) BUT it will be quieter than 7200rpm

I don't know if V80 is as quiet as P80...i'm guessing it's not...P80 - new technology?

someone please agree/disagree with me

V80 and P80 are essentially the same. The V80 is rated for sound just a tad below the P80 in sound...

dunno but isnt system disc where you really want the fastest hd possible, most people say that 5400 is allright - for storage.

check out storagereview.com, v80 performs worse than p80 in pretty much every test.

for example:

SR Bootup DriveMark 2002
The average I/O rate achieved when replaying an actual capture of a typical Windows XP machine's bootup sequence.

Samsung SpinPoint P80 (160 GB ATA-133) - 370 |
Samsung SpinPoint V80 (160 GB ATA-133) - 222 |

Call it placebo effect if you wish, but I noticed a difference between a 75GXP (7200, 2MB cache) and an 800JB (7200, 8MB). The faster drive makes the system noticeably more responsive.
