Best price on CNPS7000?

Post by MagusG » Mon Nov 01, 2004 12:36 pm

Right now I just have an Athlon XP 1700+ cooled by a not so silent thermaltake silent boost(it never was quiet). I want to get rid of what is currently the biggest noise maker. Would the ALCu be sufficient? even at 5-7v? Or should I go with the all copper version? Also, I do plan to eventually upgrade to an XP2500+ mobile and hopefully take it to at least 3200+ speeds. Would I still be able to pull off an overclock like that with the AlCu@5-7v and still be at a reasonable temp? Where is the cheapest place to pick up these HSF? Thanks

Depending on your motherboard, it may be incompatible. Otherwise, it ought to be more than plenty enough for you. Dunno about the overclock to 3200+ speeds @5-7V.

Best average price for the 7000-AlCu seems to be around $30. The best I found after a 5 minute search was here

Never dealt with them though, so caveat emptor.

I'm pretty sure it'll fit, I have a Shuttle AN35N in an antec Sonata.

It'll definitely fit. I had the same setup awhile ago. At around 7v it should sufficiently cool your 1700 if it's the T-bred B with 1.5v default. It'll probably run about the equivalent of an overclocked 2500 barton to the same speeds. That's a big YMMV but I'm thinking it'll be okay.

If I remember right my DLT3C ran around 47 idle and 52-54C loaded with that setup.

Get the AlCu, the value is definitely worth it. I went from a Silent Boost over to a Zalman unit (running at 5v), and while my temps went up a bit, the corresponding sound decrease was incredible. I dunno if my particular silent boost was faulty, but judging from other people's experiences, the loud performance is to be expected.

Oh yeah, I'm running my 2500 mobile @ 2.5ghz volted at 1.575 (lowest setting for my mobo), and its perfectly stable. If you need a reference, I picked up my cpu from mwave, but i'm sure most of the 2500 Mobiles available now will clock pretty well.

Good luck!

If you're getting one, get the AlCu. It's nice and light, and usually performs around the same as the all copper version. Don't forget to make sure it's CNPS7000A or B (ordinary 7000's have no support for Socket A's)

Or, the cheaper way is to change the Silent Boost fan to a Panaflo-L. The heatsink is actually pretty good.
