New BIOS increases CPU temp ???

Post by mbrochstein » Thu Nov 18, 2004 2:24 am

I recently updated the BIOS on my Asus P5AD2 Deluxe motherboard and the CPU (an Intel 3.4 Ghz CPU, not Extreme Edition) temperature has increased by about 10C. It now idles at about 49C and at 100% it is now as high as 69C. Prior to the BIOS update it idled at about 38C and at 100% could get up to somewhere in the lower mid 50's. The stock Intel CPU cooler fan is spinning at about 2200 or so RPM and I've enabled the BIOS's intelligent CPU fan controls (same as before). When I lower the target temp in the BIOS, the fan will spin as fast as 2800 RPM and the CPU temperature will not go above 65C. Bottomline, this is still way above the temperature range I saw before the BIOS update.

Any ideas?

Most likely the cpu temperature has not changed, but the sensor calibration has and it is now maybe reported more accurately.

I've had similar results with a BIOS update. It's probably a software issue with the on-board sensors. As to which temp is correct...that's another story. My two Asus boards report CPU temps 10C too high. I determined this using external temp probes.....

You could check to see if HyperThreading is disabled in the bios. When I tried disabling HyperThreading, cpu temp went up significantly.

Maybe Asus have fixed the problem with their calibration. Their boards mostly reports CPU temps 10C too low.

Hyperthreading has always been turned on

To answer PaulShapiro's post: Hyperthreading is enabled (and always has been). Thanks for the suggestion!
