aerocool ht-101 versus thermalright si-97

Post by dan » Thu Feb 03, 2005 9:57 pm

which heat pipe solution would you buy for a socket A athlon xp/socket 370 pentium platform, the aerocool ht-101, an all-copper design that weighs in at 480 grams, or teh thermalright si-97, one that weighs a mere 280 grams.

pricewatch/newegg lists the si-97 at $40, the ht-101 at $55

which of the two delivers better cooling, better accoustical properties performance?

one thing i like about the ht-101 SECOND EDITION is that it can be used for future models, such as the athlon 64 939 socket. one thing i like about thermalright si-97 is its lower price and lighter weight.

i would imagine that the ht-101 would perform better, if for no other reason that it is made of copper rather than al, as in si-97, which is probably why it is considerably more expensive.

dan,

I have a SI-97 installed on my 2800+ barton (@ 3200+) and it cools very well with a zalman 92mm @ 5V. I had one of those HT-101's with 2 papst 80mm 21db fans (push-->pull) installed. The temps with the HT-101 were 3 to 4 degrees (celsius) higher than with the SI-97 installed. So the SI-97 cools better + it's very quiet and cheaper as well!

For me it's CN$42 for the SI-97(w/o fan), while the HT-101 is CN$70. I wanted to get an HT-101 jr or equivalent to be able to reuse it if I upgrade to an A64 and because it would practically dump the heat straight out the case, but the SI was the best deal I could get.

In this album you can see an Ht-101 being used in a system (P4-2.66) using one 120mm fan to cool both the CPU and PSU. The fan is thermally controlled by a sensor placed in the PSU.....plus Speedfan will speed it up under heavy usage.

See if you can pull this one-fan cooling system off with that SI-97. Heh.

Thermalright SI-97 ($55) or Aerocool HT-101 ($43) ? The SI-97 with either a Noiseblocker S1 or an Akasa fan (32CFM) @ 5V, so that would make ~13CFM :?

I own both and the SI-97 works better, plus a 92mm fan is better for low noise + decent CFM than an 80.

I thought the HT101 would duct nicely to rear exhaust (that was before I got my tin snips) but it didn't work out that well.

An intake duct in the case side passively feeds the fan on the SI-97 now - perfect. 45C load for a 90W CPU.
