Cutting down a Ninja ?

Post by G7MJV » Mon Mar 19, 2007 1:11 pm

Hi there

l'm in the process of shifting my Semperon 2600+ matx into a desk top case that's only about 130mm tall.

Would l be right in thinking that cutting down the Ninja would completely ruin the effectiveness of the heatpipes ? l will buy a decent low profile cooler when funds allow but that may not be for a while.

l still have the stock AMD cooler which l may up modding with a larger, rubber mounted fan..

Thanks,
Andy

You are correct, cutting the heat pipes will stop them from functioning.

i mounted an 80mm fan in place of a 60mm fan, performance is much better and the noise level is much lower...although i didn't rubber mount it.

going the way of the larger fan may be more cost effective for the job at hand.

If you have the patience to wait for a short while, Scythe announced the Ninja Mini at Cebit.

AFAIK there are three types of "stock AMD" coolers: two of them use heatpipes, one has an 80mm fan, the other a 70 mm. The last one is the old Ajigo all-aluminum cooler which has no heatpipe and a 70 mm fan.

The Ajigo is good enough to keep cool a 90 nm Winchester @ 2300 MHz, I guess performance on your (1600 Mhz?) Sempron should be even better. Did you try to slow down your current fan?

The heatpipe coolers are (quite obviously) even better.
