E8200 temps?

Post by Chris Beard » Mon Feb 08, 2010 7:38 am

Hi all,

I'm running an e8200 @ 2.73GHz <1.1V with an IFX-14 and a scythe 500rpm 14cm fan. I get idles of around 42C and load around 58C. This feels much too high. What do other people get and what's your cooling like?

Chris.

Thread rule no 1: I'm aware that different setups generate different circumstances, I don't need to be told that comparing temps is pointless. Please don't bother.

My setup is slightly different; e8400, and no fan on the IFX-14 (just a 120mm case fan ~1 inch away). The temps I get are:
Idle (case fan @ 800rpm): 49/39 (core0/core1)
Load (case fan @ 1800rpm): 55/45 (core0/core1)

(This is with speedstep enabled)

Some BIOS' will give erroneous readings even based on the diode in the CPU. It's also possible that the HS is hot properly seated on the CPU. I would first remove the HS and look at the contact patch of the thermal compound. There should be a very thin, even contact patch covering the entire central part of the CPU.

If there is good contact between the HS and CPU and the readings under load seem abnormally high, put a finger on the base of the HS (right above the CPU is best) and see if it feels hot; 58ºC will feel pretty warm. If the HS isn't hot, then ignore the temp reading.

My experience with E8200 (it's my third, and I also played with friend's E8200) and information I gathered browsing other forums tell me that a lot (and I mean A LOT) of these particular chips have faulty temperature sensors. My current E8200 idles at 46 no matter what I do. My previous ones had very similar problems. My pal's CPU also idles at almost 50. No matter what we do, no matter the conditions, it's alway more than 40. I can run the CPU at def voltage and with a 120mm fan blowing furiously on the Ninja and still get 46. I can load te CPU @ 3,2 with F@H and still get 46. Only running it at >3,6 with some serious load takes the temps >60. I tried different bioses and I ran my current CPU on a different board too - same thing, 46 in idle.

Point - just ignore it.

Thanks all - will probably just ignore the damn thing as long as I don't get crashes.
