how can i read cpu temp in linux?

Post by jamesh » Mon Feb 02, 2004 8:23 am

i know nothing about linux so this is an idiot question, my apologies.

i have debian (i think) on my mailserver and i stuck a fan-mate on the cpu fan to stop it making a noise louder than a hoover (for real). the computer has no monitor and its some antique k6-500 or something.

so, from my putty window is there any way i can check the cpu temperature?

Probably not. At least the K6 have no on-chip sensor so any reading from the CPU itself is out of the question.

Then again, your mobo may have a sensor under the CPU socket that tries to guess the CPU temp. If your mobo does have this, likely there is a BIOS page where you can view environment readings (inc fan speeds, voltages).

If so a module like sensors (or lm.sensors) can probably pull the data: not sure how you display it on a tty - gkrellm handles it for me in a gui.

yeah if you have a better processor get lm_sensors and gkrellm, gkrellm is basically a much better version of mbm5
